The Earl of Sandwich was an Englishman who lived in the 18th century. So fond was he of games of chance that he was known as the greatest gambler in London. Not only would he play all day but he would often continue playing all night, too. On one occasion, he remained at the card-table for twenty-four hours, and during this time, the only food he had was some slices of meat and bread brought to him by his servant. Not wishing to stop playing even while he ate these, he put the meat between the bread and in this way was able to continue playing while eating. So from the name of this gambler comes the word “sandwich”.

Вы знаете, какая рыба слышит лучше всех? Прочитайте текст и узнайте ответ. Ответьте на вопрос: где человек может практически применить полученный в исследовании результат?
A Norwegian scientist, Dr. Per Stockfleth of Oslo University, fastened electrodes to the acoustic centre of the herring’s brain and established that herrings can hear five times better than other fish.
This means that a herring can be warned by noise from fishing gear and fishing vessels at a distance of several miles.
Answer the question: where can a person practically apply the result obtained in the study?

Michaelangelo was asked by the Governor of Florence to make a statue out of a block of marble. Michaelangelo set to work and, in spite of numerous difficulties, made the beautiful statue of David.
When the sculpture was ready the Governor came to look at it. He didn’t like the nose of the figure – it was too long he said. The Governor was not a good judge of sculpture, the artist knew that but still he decided to satisfy him. But how to do this without spoiling the statue? He climbed the scaffold having in his hand some marbledust. He gave a few harmless touches with his chisel and let fall some of the marbledust as though from the statue itself. The Governor could not see what the artist was doing, as the statue was about twelve feet high, he saw only the marbledust.
“That’s excellent, now you have given it life indeed!” said the Governor.
Michaelangelo smiled. Soon afterwards the statue was placed in front of the Government House in Florence.

А вы слышали, шутки, в которых используется игра слов? Прочитайте такую шутку, воспользуйтесь своими фонетическими знаниями, чтобы понять её. Напишите и прочитайте слова-омонимы, на которых построена шутка. Выполните задание: составьте пары слов-омонимов из предложенного списка, найдите значения слов в каждой паре.
